The truth about me

It had been a morning like any other in the office, me battling my usual demons, oblivious to the fresh hell the next call would bring. That day, I met Raphael De’Angelo for the first time.

De’Angelo turned out to be the most intolerable client I’d ever had the misfortune of encountering. For reasons beyond my comprehension, he seemed hell-bent on destroying me, and I couldn’t escape the powerbroker’s immense reach. Cornered, I was left with no other option but to fight back.

Though I am weary and scarred, our battle is far from over. No-one can predict the outcome. However, I am ready to tell the world where it all began, starting with the truth about De’Angelo, who he is and what he did to me.

My real name is Nicole Hill. I’m twenty-six years old and I work in the city. I am fairly ordinary except for one very bad thing I did five years ago… Click link to continue reading my story https://www.amazon.co.uk/Krish-Part-N-J-Bhogayta-ebook/dp/B07J2N1QL1/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1538828392&sr=1-2&keywords=krish

Miracles and misadventures in writing

Funny how sometimes you don’t notice the most obvious things, and that is even truer in creative writing. Here are some of my early misadventures and miraculous discoveries while penning Krish.

Be yourself

Though unconsciously done, when I first started writing, I imitated (poorly) my favourite authors. Of course, that inauthentic voice failed to resonate, compelling me to trust my own instincts, then, miraculous as it seemed, the prose flowed with natural rhythm.

Hear yourself

Only on reading the drafts aloud, did I notice how energy gushed out of the writing, like ink from a cracked cartridge. Passive text, coupled with excessive description had led to dry, unwieldy sentences. Switching to active prose, with a discerning sprinkle of adjectives and adverbs, breathed life into the writing.

Reading dialogue out loud proved to be particularly helpful, highlighting stilted and unrealistic conversation.

Speak for yourself

One of the many qualities of good dialogue is making it sound unique to each character. Hence, having fully developed the characters, with individual personalities, backgrounds and belief systems helps, so they are able to speak for themselves, in their own particular styles.

Trust yourself

After many hours of writing and re-writing the first chapter, I remained dissatisfied. Why? Because I’d been too preoccupied with the readers perspective, after all, the first chapter, not to mention the dreaded first sentence, makes or breaks a novel. Realisation dawned eventually that I would never complete a single page, if I continued to second guess the readers. Their preferences, like mine, will be subjective and no one size is going to fit all, so, I trusted creativity to do its own thing.

Free yourself

The first draft of the book had been rammed full of plots and twists. However, though exhilarating, the novel also turned out to be exhausting to read. As plot point followed plot point, hard and fast, there was literally no breathing space. It became clear I had to stop manipulating the pace of the story. Deciding to hand the reins over to the characters, I let them drive instead. Lo and behold, their story began to flow with the natural grace of a babbling brook, and the arcs waxed and waned like the moon, in satisfying cycles.

Balance yourself

Another downside of the original, plot driven approach was that the characters had remained relatively under developed, which resulted in their appearing wooden. I had underestimated the level of detail needed to bring a character to life. Again, I entrusted the characters with free will, to decide whatever they wanted to be. Soon, as though by magic, they morphed into fully fledged beings, with unique emotional, mental and spiritual personalities.

Educate yourself

Though I have always written stories, it wasn’t until I enrolled on a creative writing course that I learnt to distinguish between good and great storytelling. Technical and creative rigour are essential to crafting enduring tales. In an attempt to master these disciplines, it is imperative to practice, pactice, practice and, practice some more.

Dare To Love A Duke Blog Tour Banner

For a dashing Duke and the proprietress of a secret sensual club, can passion ever lead to love?

Thomas Powell, the new Duke of Northfield, knows he should be proper and principled, like his father. No more duelling, or carousing, or frequenting masked balls, but he’s not ready to give up his freedom just yet.

Lucia, better known as her alter ego Amina, manages the Orchid Club, a secret society where fantasies become reality. No member of the club has ever intrigued her, until the masked stranger, whose heated looks sear her skin. After months of suppressed longing, do they dare to give in to temptation?

#DareToLoveADuke by @EvaLeighAuthor has to be the naughtiest historical romance ever! Captivating right from the word go, this is a tantalising tale of forbidden love and taboo passions.

What happens at the Orchid Club, stays at the Orchid Club. No patron must reveal its scandalous secrets, and they most certainly must never fall for its proprietress, the fallen angel Amina, or Lucia to her loyal friends.

The chemistry and tension between Tom and Lucia is positively electric. I couldn’t put the book down. Much as I would love to babble on about the story, I don’t want to give away any secrets, after all, that’s the rule!

Debutante In Disguise – Eleanor Webster

A Debutante In Disguise

Determined to help people, Letty Barton has a double life – she’s a trained doctor! No-one must know ‘Dr Hatfield’ is actually a woman. Called to an emergency, she comes face to face with her patient’s brother, Lord Anthony Ashcroft.

They’d once shared a spark-filled flirtation – now he’s a brooding, scarred war-hero. But how long will it be before he recognises her, beneath her disguise, and the sparks begin to fly once more?

A Debutante in Disguise by #EleonorWebster is an inspirational story of Letty Barton, an intelligent, courageous and independent young woman who defies a very restrictive society to follow her dream.

It highlights the enormous difficulties faced by women of that era in balancing their professional aspirations with personal lives.

Set in a time when women weren’t allowed in professions deemed suitable only for men, the story is engrossing from start to finish. I enjoyed reading it.

Thank you Mills And Boon for the opportunity to review #DebutanteInDisguise.

Redemption Bay is the new novel from New York Times bestselling author #RaeAnneThayne.

McKenzie Shaw would do anything for her beloved hometown of Haven Point. It may be small and struggling, but it’s never let her down, unlike gorgeous, infuriating Ben Kilpatrick.

He left Haven Point behind years ago, for good reason. Yet seeing the town through McKenzie’s eyes could change his mind.

If he can resolve the animosity crackling between them, Ben may have found the place where he can build ties and find healing, a place where love arrives when it is least expected.

I would love to live in Haven Point, a picturesque lake town surrounded by snow-topped mountains and kind, caring residents who are always there for each other. Who wouldn’t?

McKenzie, the sweet and very capable mayor of this sleepy place, happens to love it more than most. So much so, she is willing to put up with Ben Kilpatrick, the man responsible for destroying more than just the town’s economy.

Ben on the other hand, has his own demons to put to rest, and then leave, asap. The last thing he needed was some pretty, perky mayor forcing the virtues of Haven Point down his throat.

For McKenzie and Ben, this is a blessed second chance, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship change and grow.

If you like sweet love stories, speckled with cute puppies, giggling kids and lots of small town intrigue, Redemption Bay is the book for you.

Thank you @MillsandBoon for the invite to participate in this wonderful #Blogtour.

Welcome to the Blog Tour of The Pursuits Of Lord Kit Cavanaugh by Stephanie Laurens!

So glad you could join us.

#LordKitCavanaugh

Lord Kit Blog Tour Banner

THE CAVANAUGHS are unlike any other family in early Victorian England. #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens continues to explore the enthralling world of these dynamic siblings in the eagerly anticipated second volume in her captivating series.

A Gentleman of Means

One of the most eligible bachelors in London, Lord Christopher “Kit” Cavanaugh has discovered his true path and it doesn’t include the expected society marriage. Kit is all business and has chosen the bustling port of Bristol to launch his passion-Cavanaugh Yachts.

A Woman of Character

Miss Sylvia Buckleberry’s passion is her school for impoverished children. When a new business venture forces the school out of its building, she must act quickly. But confronting Kit Cavanaugh is a daunting task made even more difficult by their first and only previous meeting, when, believing she’d never see him again, she’d treated him dismissively. Still, Sylvia is determined to be persuasive.

An Unstoppable Duo

But it quickly becomes clear there are others who want the school-and Cavanaugh Yachts-closed. Working side by side, Kit and Sylvia fight to secure her school and to expose the blackguard trying to sabotage his business. Yet an even more dastardly villain lurks, one who threatens the future both discover they now hold dear.

As usual, the inspirational Ms Laurens delivers as promised. The Pursuits of Lord Kit Cavanaugh has all the hallmarks of her classic historic romances, boasting vast knowledge of the era, brought to life through the trials and tribulations of the locals on Bristol’s dockside.

All is going well for strong, independent-minded Silva, until rake extraordinaire, Kit Cavanaugh appears and ruins all her hard work. Given their past, brief encounter, Silvia is not surprised by the handsome Lord’s haughty behaviour, and I love how she refuses to stand for it.

Kit believes he is definitely not the marrying kind. Then the beautiful, passionate Silvia, barges into his office. How had he mistaken the fiery beauty for a prude at his brother’s wedding? Now, Kit wants to know every little detail about the school teacher.

The Pursuits Of Lord Kit Cavanaugh is a sweet romance, charting the gently evolving relationship between Silvia and Kit, with some thrilling action bits woven in for good measure.

Though a sequel, it is pretty much stand alone. If you are a fan of Stephanie Laurens, this book is for you.

Thank you Mills And Boon and Mills And Boon Insiders for the wonderful opportunity to participate in this great blog tour.

Book Review – The Earl’s Countess Of Convenience

Mills & Boon kindly asked me to review The Earl’s Countess Of Convenience by Marguerite Kaye.

A countess in name only…

…tempted by a night with her husband!

Part of Penniless Brides of Convenience: Eloise Brannagh has witnessed first-hand the damage unruly passion can cause. Yet she craves freedom, so a convenient marriage to the Earl of Fearnoch seems the perfect solution!

Except Alexander Sinclair is more handsome, more intriguing, more everything, than Eloise anticipated. Having set her own rules for their marriage, her irresistible husband might just tempt Eloise to break them!

The Earl’s Countess Of Convenience is an enjoyable historical romance with engaging characters, who portray a real sense of the societal norms in the early eighteen hundreds.

Though I found the book slow at the beginning, it picks up soon as the chemistry between Eloise and Alexander develops.

I was left guessing about the ending, till the ending!

Thank you Mills & Boon and Netgalley for the opportunity review The Earl’s Countess Of Convenience.
